ON WHAT was expected to be the hottest day of the year yet, CPD Y Rhyl 1879 made the most of a glorious Sunday afternoon clash with Llanrwst United with a 3-1 away win yesterday (August 14).

After an early Rhyl onslaught, Llanrwst steadied the ship and started giving as good as they got, pinning the Lilywhites back, but it was a swift counter-attack that gave Rhyl the lead.

Alex Jones pinged a superb ball from deep in his own half out to Tom Cain on the left, who put the ball into the path of Kieran Ellis, who was able to smash it home for 1-0.

Scorer turned provider for the second, when Elliot Evans picked his opponent’s pocket and sent the ball into the path of Ellis, who lifted the ball gracefully for Jones to head in from close range for 2-0.

The home side reacted almost instantly to the second goal, as Ashley Seddon got one back for the Roosters.

But only 60 seconds later, Jones would get his second and Rhyl’s third of the match, as an innocuous challenge out on the right led to a Rhyl free kick.

Casey Faulkner sent the ball in towards goal, where Jones was there to fire it into the back of the net.

Following the early avalanche of goals, both teams seemed to wither in what must have been unbearable conditions.

Following the match, manager Gareth Thomas said: “Happy with the three points; it wasn’t a great performance, but it was efficient and we did what we had to do in what were challenging conditions for the lads.

“I think anyone here today can’t argue with the three points taken.

“We were good in front of goal, we scored some great goals, we moved the ball well at times.

“The second half was always going to be a bit of ‘no nonsense’ with the stops and starts and with both sides being tired, but overall, it is a good three points.

“Don’t forget, we were short of players today; we came with 11 players and subs, we had a bit of a nightmare when we got here finding out Aaron White was still showing suspended on Comet, even though he had a one-game ban which he served last week.

“So, we had to change our 11 when we got here. But, all we can do is go on to Wednesday night; a massive game against Flint - they are a good side and it will be another challenge.”

Indeed, Next up for Rhyl is the visit of Flint to Belle Vue on August 17 in a 6.30pm kick-off.
