Rhyl residents assembled for a unique Royal Wedding Day celebration with bin bags and rubber gloves.

About Surfers Against Sewage's (SAS) 40 volunteers met at Rhyl Harbour to give the gift of a pristine waterfront for the wedding of Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The volunteers focused on areas around the Marine Lake and the sand dunes of Horton’s Nose Nature Reserve - on the banks of the River Clwyd outlet - removing about 100 kg of litter in the Saturday morning session.

Rhyl branch beach clean organiser Town Councillor, Keith Jones said: "With the royal couple choosing our charity as one of their nominated groups, we felt it appropriate to organise an event.

“We managed to unearth almost 100 kg of litter, especially drinks cans and several plastic water bottles. With the help of the Denbighshire Litter team, who take it all away and sift through it to recycle what they can, we feel we’ve achieved a good result.

“Of note was the Herculean efforts made by one volunteer member, David Roberts, who refused to be beaten by a huge tractor tyre that had somehow ended up buried in the sand.

“By digging and shoving, the tyre was released and David is now making use of it as a garden flower bed, a great example of recycling."
