TRIBUTES have been paid to a "loving" dad and grandfather who went “above and beyond his station” for his coworkers.

Norman Butler, aged 60, had been working as a van driver for Recycle Cymru for just a month when he died in an incident at his workplace - based at the Tir Llwyd estate in Kinmel Bay - on Thursday, November 30.

Norman had started work as a van driver, collecting cardboard and plastics for the plant, after working for CAD Recycling in Denbigh.

It is understood that Norman died in an incident involving a baling machine. An inquest into Norman's death will be held next year.

Steven Jones, manager of Recycle Cymru, said: “‘Norman was a great guy. Always out to impress and help out wherever he could. He would always go above and beyond his station

“The first thing he said when he walked through the door on the first day was ‘I’m really going to enjoy it here. I can tell I’m going to fit in.’

“I’m distraught, I’ve been in business for 14 years and it’s still really hard for me to take it all in. I’m devastated for Norman’s family, and my thoughts are with them.”

A gofundme page has been set up by Norman's children Timothy, Jessica and Nigel. Money raised will go towards Norman's funeral.

A statement posted on the page, created by Norman's son Nigel, said: "My dad , Norman Butler horrifically died in a tragic accident at his work place on November 30 involving a baling machine.

"He was a loving grandfather, dad, son and brother who will be dearly missed. He was such a kind a caring person and would go out of his way to help anyone. Since this incident our lives have been completely torn apart, no one should go to work and not return home.

"We have set this fund raising page for any donations if anyone would like to make them. All received is greatly appreciated as we would like to give our hero the best send off he deserves."

Earlier this month, the Journal reported that Mr Jones closed the plant until Monday, December 4 as a mark of respect for Norman. Mr Jones said he is co-operating fully with the Health and Safety Executive who are involved in investigating the death.

Norman’s funeral was held on Wednesday at 10am. Visit gofundme.com/ednyuh-my-dad
