LIGHT is to be shone on a footpath in an attempt to tackle an issue in Rhuddlan.

Denbighshire County Council is to install street lighting across a stretch of path - which runs from Princes Road to Heol Hendre - after it was deemed a litter and dog fouling 'hotspot'.

Cllr Gareth Smith, Rhuddlan's youngest councillor at aged 20, said: "I took action after receiving a number of concerns. Someone actually approached me on Twitter and after speaking to other residents, it became clear that it needed sorting.

"The footpath is untidy, it acts as a litter and dog fouling hotspot and above all - it is unsafe to walk down at night.

"It is a popular route for parents to take when walking their children to the local primary school but at night, you can't see where you are going.

"I felt it was important for action to be taken, so I contacted the county council and they were willing and helpful and interested. Garden waste has been dumped there and it is untidy there.

"I am hoping it will deter people from dumping litter there."

Three lighting columns are to be install by the local authority in an attempt to make the area more "attractive" to residents.

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: "This route is not adopted as an official highway - it is classed as a public right of way, however, the council does carry out some maintenance work along that stretch of path if any issues emerge.

"We have been involved in discussions locally and recognise the need for additional lighting to provide additional safety reassurance to residents.

"As a result, the council has agreed to install street lighting along that stretch."
