A CEREMONY was held this morning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

The Ensign, the official flag of the RAF - that features the Union Jack and the blue, white and red roundels painted on RAF aircraft - was raised at County Hall in Ruthin at 10am.

The event was organised by Denbighshire County Council.

Cllr Peter Scott, new chairman of the Council, said: "The County Council is proud to hold such a prestigious event.

"By flying the Ensign today, we are showing our appreciation for the Royal Air Force and the servicemen and women that are serving and have already served in sacrificing their lives for our country."

The RAF was founded as the first independent Air Force in 1918, the final year of World War One.

Cllr Richard Mainon, armed forces champion for Denbighshire County Council, whose role is to make sure that council achieves its commitments to the armed forces community, addressed those in attendance.

Adrian Williams, air commodore, raised the flag, alongside Henry George Fetherstonhaugh, lord lieutenant for the Vale of Clwyd; Lady Hanmer, high sheriff of Clwyd; Peter Scott, chairman of Denbighshire County Council, Hugh Evans, leader of Denbighshire County Council, and cllr Mainon.

Following the ceremony, Mr Williams provided a presentation on the 100-year history of the Royal Air Force at Ruthin Town Hall.
