More than 35 people will swap home comforts for a night under a cardboard box for Rhyl’s homeless.

On Saturday, April 14 the volunteers will congregate at the Council Family Centre on Bedford Street with a sleeping bag and a cardboard box for Sally’s Sleep Out, organised by former Prestatyn High pupil Sally Harland for Homelessness charity Centrepoint.

Miss Harland, a 20 year old student of the University of Liverpool, said: “I came up with the idea while volunteering at a shelter in Liverpool. It's heartbreaking seeing people the same age as me while I'm in uni without any opportunities or guaranteed safety."

Sally's Sleep Out was scheduled for April 14 to encourage students home for Easter to take part. More than half of the volunteers are returning students.

The event has raised funds through a £5 minimum donation from each of the volunteers, limited to 35, through a crowdfunding campaign, which has raised £355.

While the event won't offer additional shelter services for rough sleepers, the volunteers will hold a pop-up soup kitchen and an opportunity on the day.

Miss Harland added: "We have barbers, a beautician and hair stylists on hand, and we are taking donations of sanitary products like toilet roll, towels and nappies so we can offer any services rough sleepers just cant live without."

"It's for people that struggle day to day and those that want company too as loneliness is a massive issue across society. Rhyl is as good an area as any to focus on and give back."
