A Rhuddlan man living with with dementia has been named a finalist in the national awards for Wales honouring extraordinary people.

The First Minister of the Welsh Government, Carwyn Jones, has today revealed the 2018 St David Awards finalists which includes dementia campaigner Chris Roberts who has been shortlisted for an award for Citizenship.

Mr Roberts, 56, the only finalist from North Wales for the fifth annual awards, joins BBC Newscaster Huw Edwards and Welsh Rugby captain Alun Wyn Jones on the list of finalists, recognised for his work as a spokesman for various dementia charities and organisations.

Mr Roberts said: "I'm really humbled to have been included in such company, there are some real heroes on there.

"I'm not a big one for accolades, but it brings dementia back into the spotlight where it needs to stay. Only educating people and raising awareness can we remove the fear and stigma to dispel misconceptions about the condition."

The campaigner was diagnosed aged just 50 years old and already living with emphysema and arthritis, and has since become an ambassador for the Alzheimer's society, an honorary lecturer with Bangor University for his work creating a film archive about dementia and has recently spoken at a summit in Kyoto, Japan about his experiences.

Mr Roberts has also been instrumental in founding the London based Three Nations Dementia working group, comprised of 15 people from Wales England and Scotland living with dementia.

Mr Roberts added: "Jayne and I would rather keep busy and do something than just have me sitting at home with dementia."

The father of five was nominated by his wife Jayne and daughter Kate, 20, and also received a nomination from Nigel Hallah of Swansea who also works with the Three Nations Dementia group.

In 2016, The Journal Mr Roberts, wife Jayne and the family were the subject of a BBC One Panorama documentary about his condition, filming over 18 months after a recommendation from the Alzheimer's Society.

The St David Awards awards ceremony, will take place at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on Thursday, March 22, and will now be webcast at gov.wales/stdavidawards.
