STAFF on the psychiatric unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital are preparing to put themselves through the ‘pain barrier’ in an effort to support the recovery of their patients.

Hannah Thew, assistant psychologist; Amy Hunter, Adam Evans, David Clayton and Phil Squire, healthcare support workers; Peter Williams, interim ward manager; Lindsay Jones, staff nurse; and Richard Mellor, locum psychiatrist from the Ablett unit will go the extra mile for their patients when they take part in the Delamere 10k Commando Trail in July.

The team, who work on the Cynnydd ward – a locked rehabilitation ward at the hospital in Bodelwyddan, which provides care for up to eight adults with mental health problems – are keen to collect funds to expand the range of activities currently on offer to patients.

These will help the wellbeing of patients as well as their recovery.

Hannah said: “We want to provide a more comfortable living environment for the residents on Cynnydd Ward and enable them to have access to different activities and equipment that will help them improve their wellbeing.

“Most of us have never taken part in an event of this kind before so we are all training very hard.

“It will be very challenging but we know the funds raised to support our patients will make it all worthwhile.”

The 10k trail includes obstacles – there will be walls to climb, water to wade through and logs to carry.

The trail runs through multi-terrain and involves varying underfoot conditions.

Staff have a target of £500.
