A RHYL Sixth student has been found “not guilty of robbery and theft".

BTEC applied law students conducted a mock court hearing at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhyl Campus.

Law student Tyra Beattie, of Prestatyn, played the part of the defendant and was accused of the theft of a wallet containing a football season ticket. After lengthy discussions, the verdict was her boyfriend had stolen it and it was proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was threatened by her boyfriend into keeping it.

She was found not guilty of robbery and theft, but the jury found her guilty of a lesser charge of criminal damage. The students spent weeks preparing for the trial as part of their property offences module, with the prosecution team consisting of Rhyl’s Callum Griffin and Liam Kenney, Kayleigh Davies of and Delihlah Chadwick Smith of Denbigh making up the defence.

Law tutor Peter Cornish said: “The students took on their roles in an extremely professional manner.

“It was a great opportunity for them to see the theory delivered in the classroom applied in a courtroom scenario. The extent of their research was admirable and I see a bright future ahead for many of them within the legal realms.”
