A Towyn teenager has beaten off fierce competition to clinch the win in a 3D game art competition.
Jess Roughton, 19, saw off nine other budding games developers in Gr?p Llandrillo Menai’s annual inter-college 3D Digital Game Art tournament.
Unbound by real world limits, the finalists had to create a 3D representation of an object - for example a hammer,
sword or staff - on the themes of fire, ice and air, using industry standard gaming software.
Miss Roughton said: “I was really surprised to win, especially as I had seen the standard of
the other finalists’ models. It was an interesting and very worthwhile exercise that provided us with the
opportunity to utilise all the skills that we have learned in class.”
Judges remarked that Jess’s fire staff was a “finished, polished item that could go straight into a game”.
Miss Roughton is studying for a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology: Games Development qualification at the Rhos-on-Sea campus, and walked away with a presented with a trophy and a prize voucher for winning the competition which saw Gr?p Llandrillo Menai’s colleges Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor go head to head.
Niall Smith from Eglwysbach took second place, whilst Konrad Jastrzebski from Llandudno was awarded
third.
Dave Owen, Coleg Llandrillo’s head of programme for Computing & Media Technologies, said: “I would like
to congratulate Jess on her success in the 3D games modelling competition. The overall standard of entries
was extremely impressive and I predict successful careers for many of them within the gaming industry.”
