A LARGE quantity of hay was destroyed during a barn fire.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in Rhyl, on Vale Road, at what was understood to be at a small holding on Saturday night, shortly after 10pm.

Four appliances attended the scene. Firefighters remained on the scene for seven hours - the blaze was out at 5.06am.

A spokesperson from North Wales Fire and Rescue said: “There was a quantity of hay destroyed and it took some time to dampen the site down.

“Two main jets were used and two sets of breathing apparatus.”

Eye-witnesses took to the Rhyl Forum on Facebook to describe the scene.

Ben Green said: “I can see it from my back garden.”

Joanna Sumner wrote: “It was terrible, hay bales on fire spread right across to the house barn which was burned as well.

“Smelt it hours ago. Just thought someone burning something, then realised it wasn’t when could see flames getting higher and spreading so next door neighbour called fire brigade.”

Ben Tinsley said: "The smell of the fire was quite strong at the time but had almost gone by the morning."

It is understood the fire was a result of “deliberate ignition”.

When approached by the Journal, the spokesperson from the rescue service added: “I am not aware that it [the fire] is being investigated.”
