A PLANNING application has been submitted for work to transform Rhyl's underground car park.

Ion Developments put forward the application on behalf of Denbighshire County Council for the renovation of the site on West Parade.

Plans include refurbishing the car park, improving access and visibility to motorists as well as improving the links between the car park, the town centre and leisure facilities.

It is hoped that internal lighting can be improved as well as the environment.

A construction method statement, submitted by Ion Developments, states: "The car park has 508 spaces currently plus 19 blue badge spaces. It is operated by the local authority on a pay and display basis with the opening hours being 8am until 10pm.

"The facility suffers from poor visibility from the roadside and town centre ans as such users tends to park elsewhere and walk despite the car park being closer."

Funding has been secured through a Welsh Government Town Centre Loan as well as from Council funds.

Cllr Hugh Evans, leader of Denbighshire County Council, said: “The current regeneration programme for Rhyl aims to increase the number of tourists and visitors to the resort and this application will help achieve that.

“The regeneration of Rhyl is part of the council’s corporate priority to support well-being and economic prosperity in the county.”

If the application is approved, the car park will close later this month so work can begin. Works are expected to be completed by January.
