THE contract to design and build a three storey 73-bedroom Travelodge in Rhyl has been awarded to a Bodelwyddan based construction company.

Wynne Construction, who is extending its operations into new sectors - including hotels - is to build the Travelodge for developer Ion Development on the site of the former Sun Centre on West Parade.

The hotel - with car park - will form part of the £25million Rhyl waterfront regeneration scheme.

More than 300 workers will be employed to built the hotel, which is to be created alongside a Marston pub and restaurant catering for 150 customers.

Works to clear and prepare the Travelodge site took place in December and construction started this month.

Under Wynne Construction's policy of employing local supply chain partners, contractors from the surrounding area will be hired where possible.

Chris Wynne, managing director at Wynne Construction, said: "Hotel construction is a new departure for us and is part of our growth plan. We are already looking at further design and build projects in this sector.

"The company started very close to Rhyl and several of our employees live there.

"We're proud to be helping to bring about its rebirth as a significant visitor destination."

Founded in 1926 in Rhuddlan, Wynne Construction relocated its headquarters to Bodelwyddan in 2005. It operates across North Wales and the North West.

The contract was awarded under the North Wales Construction Framework.

The Travelodge, which will have a render finish and include a ground floor reception, bar and breakfast area, is the second part of the £7million scheme on the waterfront development awarded to Wynne Construction by Ion Development, which earlier in 2017 completed the first phase of refurbishment works to the Pavilion, and converted the Sky Tower into a light beacon.

Steve Parry, managing director at Ion Development, said: "The Travelodge development will add a brilliant dimension to Rhyl’s waterfront offering.

"Wynne Construction have delivered an excellent refurbishment to the Pavilion Theatre and we look forward to working with them again on another successful project."
