Conservative Party leader David Cameron visited Coleg Llandrillo Abergele and chatted students about the learning opportunities available in the area as part of a whistle stop tour.
The Tory leader was given a guided tour of its Hairdressing and Nail commercial salon, IT suite, Genealogy Centre and student support facilities, by Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Principal Huw Evans OBE, Gerry Jenson, Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Assistant Principal, and Tony Robinson, Head of Coleg Llandrillo Abergele, Darren Millar, Clwyd West AM and David Jones MP, Conservative MP for Clwyd West.

Stephanie Pickering from Rhyl and Kieran Lister, Liam Curry and Melanie Curry, all from Meliden, put their questions to the Conservative leader on a range of topics including job opportunities in North Wales and the party’s green policies.

Mr Cameron said: “I am delighted to be here. I know how important the College is to the local community and it is a delight to meet the staff involved with making the College such a success. It provides a fantastic opportunity to raise the skills levels with in the area and engages the community, giving many people the chance to return to education.”

Coleg Llandrillo Abergele continues to work closely with Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan and further local partnerships have been strengthened notably with Conwy and Denbighshire NHS Trust, as the College has developed the Medical Secretarial and Medical Receptionist Diploma programmes further.

Tony Robinson said: “The majority of the students are now employed within the NHS or have progressed on to higher education courses at colleges and universities.

“The College is an established part of the Abergele landscape and we are committed to meeting the needs of the community. A whole range of courses are running in September, including A levels and GCSEs and courses in the Family History Centre.”

The last academic year at Coleg Llandrillo Abergele was a particularly successful one, with over sixty students achieving their Access to Higher Education Certificates. The majority of successful students received course offers from their first choice university. Destinations included Bangor, Chester, Liverpool and Manchester universities.
