A MAN escaped unhurt after a fire broke out in his home while he was asleep.
The 41 year-old from Roland Avenue, Kinmel Bay, was woken by smoke drifting into the lounge and got out before the fire took hold.
The fire happened shortly after 3am on Sunday and Mike O'Meara, a fire safety enforcement officer, said the man was fo
rtunate to get out unharmed because there were no smoke alarms to give an early warning of fire.
Mr O'Meara said: "It is extremely fortunate that we are not dealing with another fire death here in North Wales.
"The fire appears to have been caused by a discarded cigarette in the kitchen. Our advice is to use a proper, heavy ashtray that can't tip over easily and is made of a material that won't burn and make sure your cigarette is not still burning when you are finished – put it out, right out.
"Also, never smoke in bed – if you need to lie down, don't light up.
