THE REGION'S coastline will be lit up this weekend to mark the first anniversary of Madeleine McCann's disappearance.
On Saturday night, people of all ages are being encouraged to gather along the four mile seafront between Rhyl and Prestatyn with their torches, lanterns and candles from 9.30pm to 10pm as part of a national Lighting the Way Home day for Madeleine.
Despite a high profile campaign to find Madeleine, there have been no confirmed sightings of the four year old from Leicestershire since she disappeared from her apartment while on holiday with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3 last year. It is not known if she is still alive.
Prestatyn resident Vivien Holmes, who is helping organise the region's event on behalf of The Helping to find Madeleine (HTFM) campaign, feels Madeleine's disappearance has highlighted the horror caused when children are kidnapped by organised crime and every effort should be made to ensure it does not continue.
She said: "It shocked us all into doing something to fight against this evil trade. Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, invite everyone to stand together light a candle and shine a light for Madeleine's safe return home.
"This will raise awareness and show the world that we are determined to stamp out this terrible trade in the suffering of God's most precious, innocent, helpless little children."
Rev Quentin Bellamy, vicar of Prestatyn, will lead prayers for Madeline's safe return on Prestatyn Promenade during the Lighting the Way Home event.
