A SPIRITUAL leader is struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss of his granddaughter.
Meg Burgess, three, died when a house wall collapsed as she walked along her street of Ffordd Penrhywlfa, Prestatyn, on Saturday, July 26 with her mother and baby brother.

Bishop Raymond Burgess, a leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who covers the Rhyl branch on Vale Road, has this week revealed the "heartache" he and his wife Dawn have felt since the eldest of their three grandchildren died.

A spokeswoman for the family has issued a statement on their behalf.

She said: "They say that the joy they have from being parents and grandparents is immense, so likewise the heartache they now feel is almost unbearable. Meg was so very special to them.

"He (Bishop Burgess) admits to finding it very difficult to act as both minister and close relative in this dreadful situation, but finds great comfort in his own faith."

Since news of the tragedy broke, the family have received practical support from fellow members of the church both locally and nationally, such as providing meals, cleaning, laundry and gardening. Meg's parents, Peter and Lindsay, are regular worshippers and work with youngsters.

Young members have helped complete a garden clearance project started by Mr Burgess shortly before the tragedy.

Bishop Burgess wants to thank all who have shown compassion to the family.

The spokeswoman added: "Special thanks are merited for the hospital staff and police, who have been incredibly professional, dedicated and helpful.

"His thoughts also go out to those who have or may feel any responsibility for this tragedy."

Originally from Southampton, Peter Burgess, 27, is the eldest of five children of Bishop and Mrs Burgess.

He moved to Rhyl with Lindsay five years ago, shortly before Bishop Burgess was appointed to his current spiritual role in North Wales.

Police and the health and safety officials are still investigating the tragedy .

Meg's funeral is being held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Vale Road, Rhyl, on Friday, August 22 at 1pm.
