A LEADING environmentalist is backing a community's fight against a large recycling centre being built in its village.
Professor David Bellamy has given his support to the Rhuddlan Environment Group (REG) in their campaign to prevent the planned centre going ahead near to the historic Rhuddlan Castle.
At a public meeting organised by the REG last Wednesday, there wa
s a unanimous vote against the location of the recycling centre, although opponents also gave support to recycling.
Professor Bellamy believes the views of the Rhuddlan public and other factors mean the centre should not be located in the village.
He said: "Surely the heritage of Rhuddlan Castle and the biodiversity and other resources of its freshwater and tidal wetlands are more precious than simply the meeting of current recycling targets.
"The Welsh Assembly is constantly warning of all sorts of environmental problems, including rising sea levels and tidal surges. How then can Rhuddlan even be considered as a suitable location for the siting of such a facility?"
The campaign against the centre will be stepped up on Sunday with a protest march being staged to highlight the level of opposition.
Walkers will set off from Rhuddlan Library car park on Vicarage Lane at 2pm and converge on the planned site for the recycling centre, which would be for individual use for disposal of items such as paper, glass and electrical goods. It is intended to cater for surrounding towns as well as Rhuddlan.
A spokeswoman for the REG said: "The suggested site for the recycling centre is situated close to Rhuddlan Castle and the River Clwyd. REG is concerned for the future of the marshland and the effects on tourism in the village as a new hotel is being constructed adjacent to the proposed development."
For further details on the march and REG, contact Mandy Brisco on 01745 591357 or Brenda Taylor on 01745 591670.
The recycling site is due to be discussed by Denbighshire County Council's planning committee.
