FEBRUARY was a busy month, we kicked it off with a visit from the Environment Minister, Jane Davidson, who came to see how we are getting on with our Climate Change Challenge.

We gave the Minister a tour of our centre, and ended in the main hall with an update on our journey so far using storyboards. The first section outlined how we’ve worked with the media and the community, including a breakdown of a questionnaire undertaken by our committee at the start of the Challenge and the outcome of our climate challenge quiz held on January 22.

Both of which show a reasonably high understanding of the issues associated with climate change within our community.

The Minister thought the idea of the quiz - using the tips from the carbon footprint booklet - was a great way of getting people engaged. In her words, “That’s 38 more people who have looked through the booklet”. You can see the booklet for yourself at: http://wales.gov.uk/walescarbonfootprint/home/myfootprint/tips/?lang=en

The next storyboard highlighted all of the audits taken place on our electricity and water use. We have also been looking at the way we manage our hall and activities.

The last storyboard outlined the simple insulation work we have already implemented on our heating pipes along with information on our future buildings plans – which you can read about on our Carbon Footprint web page  http://pontroberthall.co.uk/index2.htm.

After the storyboards Jane Davidson spent a bit of time with the headmistress of Ysgol Pontrobert, Jane Peate.

They discussed the school’s participation with the eco-schools scheme and how they have been involved with the Climate Change Challenge.

The evening ended with a question session, while enjoying homemade cakes and tea. It was a very pleasing visit by the Minister and we thank her for making the time to come and see us.
