POLICE have been encouraging youngsters to try on “beer goggles” to reduce underage drunkeness.

The Local Policing Teams from Abergele Police Station recently set up an impact day to reduce crime and anti social behaviour in the area.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team visited Abergele Youth Club, which is run by Conwy Youth Services, where they talked to the young people to highlight the dangers and affects of alcohol consumption, and passed a set of “beer goggles” around for the youngsters to try on.

A spokeswoman for North Wales Police said: “A set of "beer goggles" were brought to the club which when worn gives the user a sense of how the sense of vision can be affected by alcohol.”

“Following this there were given first aid advice by the Youth Service team on how to treat persons who may be injured or become ill following alcohol consumption and even made their own non-alcoholic cocktails for a treat!”

The event was held with teams from the Conwy Youth Services, Younger Persons Drug and Alcohol and Martyn Schlangen who provided some goodies for the young people.

The spokesman said: “Everyone who attended enjoyed the event and we hope to work closely with the teams again to highlight the affects of underage drinking.”

The local Neighbourhood Policing Teams also spent time in Tesco, Abergele and ASDA, Kinmel Bay to hand out leaflets to highlight underage drinking and to encourage reporting incidents to North Wales Police.
