A DONATION drive is gathering pace as a Pensarn community centre nears completion.

The group behind the Dewi Sant Community Centre near Abergele, which will provide learning and social opportunities, is calling on residents to dig deep and donate to help decorate and equip the building in time for Christmas.

Gordon Corr, a member of the centre committee, said: “Excellent progress is being made on the construction of the Canolfan Dewi Sant Community Centre.

“Now that funding for the building is in place the steering committee is working hard to raise money for furnishings and equipment.”

Gordon said that committee members were “delighted” at the rate of progress on the building, which they hoped would be ready by December.

Five months after the first sod was cut, the Venerable Bernard Thomas, Archdeacon of St Asaph, attended a topping out ceremony on October 8 which marked the completion of the main structure.

Gordon said: “After years of hard work planning and fund raising it is wonderful to see our dream becoming a reality. We are very grateful to the Big Lottery, the Welsh
Assembly’s Community Facilities and Activities Programme, WREN, the Church in Wales and other grant funders for their generous support.

“I would also like to pay tribute to members of the church and community who have organised fund raising events and given donations.”

However, though the end is in sight, more still needs to be done to make sure the building will be ready for the community.

A “shopping list” of what is needed for the centre has been printed and anyone who would like to see this or contribute towards the cost of items for the new centre should contact the treasurer Ken Davies on 01745 832407.

Bookings are now being taken for the use of the centre. Potential users should contact Barbara Pilley 01745 823534 for details of availability and charges.
