A £1.7 million upgrade to houses in Abergele has been completed.

Thirty properties on the Maes Y Dre estate have been refurbished after the housing association Cartrefi Conwy discovered major structural defects.

Residents have been living in temporary accommodation but should be able to return to their homes soon.

A spokesman for Cartrefi Conwy said upgrades were planned but more work had to be done on some of the houses on Maes y Dre.

The spokesman said: “The properties were identified as having poor environmental performance. They were difficult to heat, suffered from damp and condensation problems, and had a limited life expectancy if left untreated.”

Now the houses have been re-roofed, insulated, had doors and windows replaced, had new kitchens and bathrooms installed, have been rewired and have been fully redecorated.

In addition, the work included the installation of energy efficient gas heating and solar thermal panels in a bid to reduce tenant’s energy bills.

Andrew Bowden, chief executive of the association said “The scheme undertaken at Maes Y Dre represents the very best practice in housing improvement schemes in Wales. It combines a sustainable investment in the environmental improvement of housing stock and fundamental improvements to tackle fuel poverty.”

The revamped properties have already drawn praise from local politicians.

Town councillor Richard Waters said: “The residents are very fortunate to have this and It should be an example for other people to follow.”

Cllr Waters said he was keen on the installation of solar panels as the environment friendly approach was the right step to take.

He hoped Cartrefi Conwy would share the cost and benefit implications of the panels in order to encourage more people to become involved in small-scale energy generation.

Darren Millar, Clwyd West AM, said: “Cartrefi Conwy residents deserve top quality housing, this project is delivering just that and will make a real difference to people’s lives.“
