PRESTATYN’S crumbling war memorial could be restored to its former glory.

The memorial has taken a battering over the winter with damage to the stone work and there are also concerns over a two foot drop from the memorial’s platform.

The Rev Quentin Bellamy, vicar of Prestatyn said that the church had taken on responsibility for rejuvenating the memorial which could cost £10,000.

Prestatyn’s Christ Church, in partnership with Denbighshire County Council’s Conservation Team, are looking to source grants to carry out the repairs.

He said: “We came to the war memorial a few months ago after the terrible winter, and saw there was a huge chunk out of the steps missing. It’s a first class war memorial, it’s such good quality and is a grade two listed building.”

“We want to restore it, clean it and remedy some of the unfortunate work that has been done previously, as well as put some rails around it so that you don’t fall down the gap.”

Grants are now being sought to fund the repairs which are estimated to cost £10,000.

Phil Ebrell, a conservation architect for Denbighshire County Council, said the Welsh heritage group CADW had shown an interest in helping to repair the memorial.

He said: “It’s suffered from frost attack, and could do with some TLC. It’s built on a platform which is standing on a sloping site, and it is not in good shape, there’s a risk of people falling from the platform.

“We’ve requested for grant aid to see if we can get help, and CADW have been receptive of the idea. It’s a listed building and should be in good condition.

Mr Bellamy said: “It’s a fantastic piece of work and a fitting tribute to the people who died in both of the wars from Prestatyn.”
