VOTERS across Wrexham have started to receive their annual voter registration forms.
A council chief says they could mean the difference between having your say and losing your voice on the issues that affect you.
Next spring people will be able to vote in the Welsh Assembly election and two potential referendums – one on the law-making powers of the National Assembly for Wales and the other on the voting system for the UK Parliament.
Local electoral registration officer Isobel Garner and her staff will be sending forms to households in Wrexham over the coming weeks to compile the electoral register that will form the basis of all these elections.
Voters will be asked to update the annual canvass with details of everyone in their household who is eligible to vote and return the form as soon as possible.
Isobel Garner said: “This year’s UK parliamentary general election was high profile and we were pleased with the increase in registration in the run-up to polling day.
“However, some people may not realise that they have to register every year, by completing the annual canvass form that comes through your door, you can rest assured that your vote will be secured for next year.”
Kay Jenkins, head of the Electoral Commission’s Wales office, said: “Next year will be an exciting one for voters in Wales, with elections and two referendums planned, but you can’t have a say if you’re not on the electoral register.
“We already know that the Welsh Assembly election will be taking place on May 5 next year and the referendum on the law making powers of the National Assembly for Wales is planned for the spring, so voters can start making preparations now to ensure they don’t miss out.”
