BIRTHDAY boy Josh Evans will make his Newtown home debut at home to Prestatyn Town on Saturday (2pm).

The 18-year-old midfielder celebrated his birthday in midweek - just days after his debut as a substitute in Newtown’s 2-2 draw at derby rivals Aberystwyth Town.

Now the former Shrewsbury Town youngster is preparing for his home bow with the Robins still unbeaten in the league.

Evans said: “I really enjoyed making my debut at Aberystwyth and it was even more pleasing that the lads hit back to get a point so late in the day.

“We are still unbeaten this season and that is testament to the management and squad at Newtown.”

Evans is likely to make his home bow along with experienced former TNS and Welshpool defender Michael Jackson.

With Cale having already snapped up youngsters Craig Whitfield and Sean Jones from TNS, the Mid Wales side will hand home debuts to a host of players.

Despite the personnel changes the Robins remain unbeaten with Evans keen to maintain the run.

“Prestatyn have some talented players like Ross Stephens and Lee Hunt but we will go into the game with confidence, having won at Haverfordwest and drawing at Aberystwyth.”

Meanwhile Evans - son of former Newtown and Montgomery Town winger Nigel Evans - insists he hopes to help his new club become a force in the elite 12-club Welsh Premier.

“I am currently doing my coaching badges and am looking ahead to after my playing days.

“Although at 18 I am still young enough to get back into the league my main aim is to develop as a player and learn from Andy Cale.

“There is a terrific set-up in place and Latham Park has some of the best facilities around so I cannot wait for my home debut.”

Newtown secretary Owen Durbridge welcomed the Montgomery-based youngster to Latham Park.

“Josh is a talented lad and was very highly regarded on and off the pitch at Shrewsbury,” said Durbridge.

“Josh wanted to play for Newtown after his release this summer and we back him to make an impact.”
