THE dream of claiming a national title is over as far as a pair of Denbigh golfers are concerned.

Last week Denbigh Golf Club representatives Stan Roberts and his son James entertained two members from Ashton On Mersey Golf Club in the sixth round of this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes competition.

The Denbighshire pairing lost on the 18th and last hole, meaning a two-up margin of victory for the visitors, thus ensuring the end of the exciting Denbigh journey in the nationwide tournament.

Turning to regional contests and there has been some Denbigh success on this front.

The North Wales Salvers 36-hole competition was held at the North Wales Golf Club, Llandudno, attracting 98 entries and the winners were Denbigh members Robert Render (six handicap) and Arwel Hughes (12).

The morning 18 holes were a betterball medal and the pair scored a nine-under-par nett 62, while in the afternoon foursomes a three-under-par nett 68 was enough to secure victory by two shots.

A unique double was sewn up at Denbigh Golf Club on Saturday.

Ted Wilding celebrated his President’s Day competition which attracted 163 entries, and the winner was Denbigh resident Joshua Hannen with a good score of 43 points off his handicap of 10, which has been reduced to nine.

This means that Joshua has won the Captain’s Day and President’s Day competitions during the same year, which is believed to be a unique achievement in the history of the golf club.

Two ladies’ section members from Denbigh have claimed victory in a competition away from their own club.

Earlier this month the Rhos-on-Sea Golf Club open betterball stableford competition was won by a team of two lady members from Denbigh Golf Club, namely Melanie Hannen and Alison Matthews.

They secured top spot with a score of 40 points.
