A FUN Day has been organised by Newtown Town Council to celebrate the start of the Welsh stage of the Tour of Britain.

The prestigious cycling race is returning to Wales for the first time since 2004 and stage three of the Tour of Britain will begin in Newtown on Monday, September 13.
The Welsh leg will travel the length of Powys before ending the day in Swansea.

The race will see Olympians Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy and Welshman Geraint Thomas, who wore the White Jersey for Best Young Rider during this year’s Tour de France, taking part.

To celebrate the Tour starting the Welsh stage in Newtown, a fun day has been organised by Newtown Town Council.

Running from 10am to 4pm, a range of activities will be taking place such as a children’s entertainer, a marching band, bucking bronco, a fun fair and much, much more.

Also taking place is a golden ticket picnic for children aged from three to 10-years of age.

Newtown Town Council has 100 tickets to give away to children who live within a 10-mile radius of the town.

To apply for your ticket send your name and address to the Town Clerk, The Council Offices, The Cross, Broad Street, Newtown, Powys, SY16 2LS, or email townclerk@newtown.org.uk

There will also be a Singing in the Park event from 4pm to 7pm with a free hog roast on offer.

The Tour of Britain is the UK’s biggest professional cycle race and a centrepiece of the British sporting calendar with 96 of the world’s top cyclists from 16 professional international teams competing in this year’s tour and Powys County Council is a proud sponsor of the Welsh leg.

Cllr Wynne Jones, board member responsible for regeneration and development, said: “We are delighted that the country’s best known and most viewed cycling event will be starting in Newtown. The event is hugely popular and likely to attract thousands of visitors to Powys, providing a welcome boost to the economy.”

The Welsh leg of the tour is 150 kilometres in length and will start from Newtown at 10.15am with the route heading south on the A483. Just eight kilometres into the race, the opening King of the Mountains climb will take place at Gwynant.

The opening Sprint of the Day will take place in Llandrindod Wells just an hour into the stage. From there, it will go through Builth Wells and Llanwrtyd Wells before heading into Carmarthenshire and on to Swansea.
