Marek chosen by Tories to fight for Assembly seat

VETERAN politician John Marek is bidding to make a sensational comeback to public office.

The former Labour MP and AM, who surprised many by joining the Conservatives earlier this year, will fight to regain his old seat at next year’s Assembly elections.

It will mean going head to head with old adversary Lesley Griffiths, the town’s Labour AM who once worked as Dr Marek’s secretary,

And the pair have already fired the opening salvos in a war of words ahead of the May contest.

Dr Marek said he thought his “good name” in Wrexham could give him the edge, while Miss Griffiths branded the former left-wing firebrand “fickle”.

Mr Marek, who was the first Czech-speaking member of the House of Commons, took the Conservative candidature in Wrexham after beating two other contenders in a ballot on Saturday.

Members of the general Wrexham electorate – and not just Conservative Party members – were invited to the meeting at the Ramada Hotel.

Between 30 and 40 people turned up to fire questions at Dr Marek and his two opponents, Denbighshire councillor Julian Thompson-Hill and Ranil Jayawardena from Hampshire.

Dr Marek, who was independent AM for Wrexham after falling out with Labour in 2003 until his defeat by Miss Griffiths in 2007, was victorious after the second ballot.

Yesterday he told the Leader: “I am delighted and honoured to be chosen to fight Wrexham.

“I suspect Labour will try to do their best to smear me, as they have done over the years since they threw me out, but I am not afraid of that.

“I believe I have a good name with the people of Wrexham.

“I have a track record and they know me.

“I changed to the Conservatives because the party is now very much at the centre of politics and has policies to give power to the people, such as those for elected police chiefs and health boards.

“They are not going to waste money on armies of bureaucrats where they are not necessary.”

Nicola Wilson, chairman of Wrexham Conservative Association, said: “We are very lucky to have John Marek. He is a very experienced politician who lives in Wrexham and is very popular with people in the area.”

Miss Griffiths said: “Next May, Mr Marek will have stood for four different parties in all four elections to the National Assembly for Wales since 1999.

“This fact alone tells the voters of Wrexham all they need to know about his fickle and unreliable approach to the serious issue of representing Wrexham and its people.

“Mr Marek may not be able to make his mind up about where his own political allegiances lie.

“However, the people of Wrexham made their minds up about him in 2007 and rejected him.

“Now he is to stand as a Tory candidate, there is no reason whatsoever to believe they will change their views of him.”

North Wales Liberal Democrat AM Eleanor Burnham said: “It should be a fascinating and interesting contest, which I will be watching with great interest.”

Marc Jones, Plaid Cymru spokesman in Wrexham, said: “John Marek fought the last election as a left-wing challenger to Labour.

“He’s now trying as a right-wing challenger with the Tories.

“His former supporters, who want to defend public services and jobs, will quite understandably now be looking to support a political party that is consistent in its message. They will find a warm welcome in Plaid Cymru.”

I'd have thought the Tories would know better.

  2. Posted by: truth hurts at 12:31 on 03 August 2010 Report

Check out his property ownership to question whether he was always a Tory!

  3. Posted by: Yachydda at 12:31 on 03 August 2010 Report

Well he's got to be more trustworthy than Labour... all they have done is cost us more and more and given it to the banks... Marek is a better choice than any other, as for Griffiths... she walked away from my front door unable to answer several questions on "Labour" honesty...she's just another "Labour" money grabber..not a good politician in any term.

My earlier post was removed,it seems Marek and his new found tory freinds are a little sensitive to a good old fashioned bit of truth. But Marek will not win the seat, not a snowballs chance in hell!.The reason he won in the past was because he was viewed as a peoples champion, now he is completely the opposite,a lapdog for new Tories, the party who are hammering the poor and making the rich a lot richer.

Marek? “good name” in Wrexham ? Hamilton and Guttermans running mate when they tried to kill Wrexham FC. The man is creepy, and his poliical record says it all, doesn't get his own way,so moves around from party to party. No one wanrts him!

What I do not understand is why the heck are people still trusting "Labour" ?... they rip the goodness out of our country... give all our rights away to Europe.. make the people of this country third class citizens... sell all our gold reserves to there friends on the cheap...and then blame the incoming government for doing what has to be done... hypocrites and hypocracy come to mind...voted in by idiots who do not understand right from wrong..

Some very revealing comments from elected reps.... Plaid who are in coalition with Labour in WAG....LibDems in Wrexham...in alliance with ScotNats at Westminster and the same for Labour....who can hardly claim left wing status after the wreckage they wrought onl the economy

  8. Posted by: Yachydda at 15:21 on 03 August 2010 Report

tommy: repost your comment.... i would... the leader management are loseing readers hand over foot because they refuse to let people have there say...and refuse to appoint a moderator to manage comments... point: this post will probably be removed as well.... so much for a democratic media outlet.

That's all we need, a disaffected, unsuccessful, interfering busybody who cannot keep his nose out of Wrexham affairs. When will he learn that nobody is interested in his opinions most of which are bordering on the ludicrous.

  10. Posted by: Yachydda at 17:28 on 03 August 2010 Report

disaffected: would be interesting to know whom you are refering too

I have had comments reinstated by the Leader when I complained there was nothing wrong with the comments. ------------ Speeders in Penyffordd currently on holiday or being diverted to Dobshill because of A55 Warren Bank works

Yack, mind you dont fall off that soapbox ,soon as I heard about Mareks latest stunt this morning I thought "the Yack will really get off on this one ,orders would come through from HQ ,go forth and support our new ally and use the old story about the opposition candidate being on your doorstep and walking away because they could not answer your questions" Give dates and times Yack when this happened.

  13. Posted by: liberty1 at 20:50 on 03 August 2010 Report

coalmines/steelworks/shipbuilding scrapped by the CONS, banks/building soc deregulated to allow lending to get out of control ,law firms allowed to advertise which is why we now have a claim claim culture ,as for Europe ,Thatcher signed the the treaty which gave away the rights of this countries people to Europe

  14. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:00 on 03 August 2010 Report

As for the sale of gold ,real Daily Mail/Express stuff ,when did this country last trade on the gold standard? under theTories in the 1950s,disaster, everyone else had abandoned it yrs before, the CONS sold all the state owned industries to their friends and the public are still paying today.

  15. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:10 on 03 August 2010 Report

As for the comment by disaffected I think it is spot on.Welome to Dave/Gleggys Britain ,remember were all in this together, thats what they keep telling us, both unelected and should have a gov health warning ,the foot soldiers will carry the burden as usual.

  16. Posted by: Yachydda at 07:19 on 04 August 2010 Report

liberty1: Give dates and times Yack when this happened. At the last assembly elections while she was accompanied by Shan Wilkinson.

  17. Posted by: Yachydda at 07:22 on 04 August 2010 Report

thatcher never closed the mines Scargill and his thugs in the unions did that and no thatcher did not give our rights away to europe Labour did by refusing us a referendum it promised in an election... we are paying now as a direct result of Labours mis management corruption and lies... even there own MP's are saying it will be decades before they get in again.

  18. Posted by: Gwin Coch at 07:57 on 04 August 2010 Report

Well if CaMORON and Cleggover keep carrying on the way they are doing, I think we will be seeing Labour back in power much sooner than you think!

  19. Posted by: Yachydda at 19:29 on 04 August 2010 Report

Gwin Coch: This country has been sold down the river by Labour... it would be a very sad day if they get back in because they have made things so bad that nothing can be recovered... by any party... including common sence

  20. Posted by: Yachydda at 20:21 on 04 August 2010 Report

But realisticaly..regardless of who is in power in Westminister... its the lot in Cardiff we have to wory about... and by all accounts Plaid are far from being in control... Labour in Wales is far more dangerous than they ever were in Westminister.... as Plaid will find out .

  21. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:24 on 04 August 2010 Report

What a sad figure the Yack is ,he resembles a punch drunk boxer hanging on to the ropes ,he thought this was his comeback via Dave/Gleggy(unelected) ,but even he knows he cant avoid the punches of truth that will floor him, the CONS and their fair weather friends ,there is no delight in seeing the death throws of a person who has come to see reality but still hides behind the propaganda which they know is so untrue.

  22. Posted by: Yachydda at 21:31 on 04 August 2010 Report

liberty1: again you resort to personal attacks... what the hell are you on? It seems to me the only ones worried by the Conservatives are Labourite morons who wouldn't know the truth at any cost... your attacks on me seem to be deliberate... if anyone is sad its you.... do us all a favour and shut up.

  23. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:40 on 04 August 2010 Report

Mr Marek, has joined the party that has given us Archer,4 yrs,perjury/perv justice,Aitken,18 mths,perjury/perv justice, just to name2 ,though MPs from all parties had their noses in the trough it was the CONS who claimed the most ,ie having moats cleaned ,let him join Yack and his mob ,hellbent on taking this country back to the 1920/30s or should that be1820/30s?

  24. Posted by: Yachydda at 21:42 on 04 August 2010 Report

liberty1: he thought this was his comeback via Dave/Gleggy(unelected) What comeback... I never went away... just on holliday with my family... and as for unelected... whats that all about then?... we have never had PM's or deputies elected into office... just elected as MP's....just so you understand the basics.

  25. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:54 on 04 August 2010 Report

Yack ,if I had known you were sitting at your keyboard all evening waiting for me to get in touch I would have come on line earlier , you really are struggling to come up with answers ,you always claim things are personal when you have no reply ,as for unelected ,I made that point along time ago, please do be originalxxx

  26. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:06 on 04 August 2010 Report

Gwin Coch, CaMORON/Cleggover ,made me chuckle ,good one.

  27. Posted by: Llay boy at 22:16 on 04 August 2010 Report

I'm entertained by the former leader of what I thought was supposed to be a radical Socialist party reinventing himself as a Conservative standard bearer less than a year after dissolving his former party / vanity project. I'm even more amused by the local Tories being naive enough to adopt him as a candidate. Dr Marek's inability to get on with political colleagues in even the most trivial ways has always been the main issue behind his political evolutions: he's always in a party of one.

  28. Posted by: Yachydda at 22:25 on 04 August 2010 Report

liberty1: you relly must lead a very lonly life... im busy doing work... and coming on here when i have time is turning out to be quite humourous... have you any more jokes to tell us... not that anyones laughing at them... as for original... you keep repeating yourself. (self confessed)

  29. Posted by: Yachydda at 22:28 on 04 August 2010 Report

Llay boy: I couldnt agree with you more but its got to be better than Labour..

  30. Posted by: Llay boy at 22:31 on 04 August 2010 Report

Having met both Marek and Lesley Griffiths and been able to assess them on their credentials as human beings, what I'd say to local electors is: regardless of your politics, your AM is an important figure, vote for the saner candidate as a more effective representative

  31. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:34 on 04 August 2010 Report

Yack if your work was really that important would you really care about what I wrote? Or is it your vanity that makes you reply like some Victorian schoolmaster who feels that their postion in life and views must not be questioned?

  32. Posted by: Yachydda at 22:44 on 04 August 2010 Report

Llay boy: Ditto with meeting both... however... Leslie Griffiths was lost.. maby because she was nervous.. i dont know.. but in anycase I was not at all impressed with her total lack of answers... cont

  33. Posted by: Yachydda at 22:44 on 04 August 2010 Report

cont...John marek i have known since the 80's and have met him on numerous occasions.. he has the confidence to be a powerfull person that I think this area needs... we need someone to stand up to Cardiff not someone who will tow the party line... but yes you may and may not be correct with your view... in any case the election is next year... plenty of time for Labour to dish the dirt.

  34. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:45 on 04 August 2010 Report

Yack ,just to remind you,on two occasions you have flounced off this site like a premadona who could not get their own way and announced that you would not reply to my comments anymore, like all CONS you could not be trusted ,what you said was untrue so how can anyone believe what you write on here?

  35. Posted by: Yachydda at 22:51 on 04 August 2010 Report

liberty1: give it up your borring the shit out of the readers.

  36. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:55 on 04 August 2010 Report

Yack, starting to use fowl language, sure sign that your losing your grip ,central office wont like that,Dave (unelected) will be on the phone first thing tomorrow
