Asbestos garage dumped at Flintshire beauty spot

FLY-TIPPERS have dumped an entire garage in a beauty spot.

The culprits tipped the old asbestos building in the walkers’ car park at Pistyll Gwyn Quarry in Llanarmon-Yn-Ial

Community councillor Martyn Holland was alerted to the incident after it was discovered by a member of the public last week.

He said: “Someone has very craftily driven in to the car park, during the hours of darkness no doubt, and tipped it. It’s an old asbestos garage and there’s broken glass everywhere.

“It’s a hazard, it’s dangerous and it’s taking up two or three car parking spaces.

“The worrying thing is that it’s an asbestos garage so there’s a health issue here. Not only that, it’s been dumped in an area of outstanding natural beauty.”

The quarry, which is owned by the Lafarge Group, is very popular with walkers.

Cllr Holland added: “What worries me is that because someone has tipped in the car park other people might now start tipping."

Efforts are now under way to track down the culprits.

Cllr Holland said: “Whoever owns the garage will recognise it. To be fair to the person whose garage it is they might not even know it’s been tipped.

“They could have paid someone to take it away assuming it would be disposed of properly.

“We want to know who has done this and we would like them to pay to clean it up.”

The incident has been reported to Denbighshire Council, but a spokesman said it was not the council’s responsibility.

He added: “We do believe they have got it in hand.”

A spokesman for Lafarge said: “The quarry has been closed for years. In order to provide a useful amenity to the community, Lafarge has, at the request of Denbighshire County Council, provided a parking facility for the use of visitors.

“The company removes fly-tipped rubbish on a regular basis. The current matter is being dealt with by us as disposal of this type of material has to be undertaken in a controlled manner.

“It is disappointing that irresponsible people are dumping rubbish here.”

The selfishness of some people staggers me sometimes. It would be nice of those responsible were tracked down, prosecuted and fined, but I doubt it.

Thats the trouble with this country... its too lenient...a piddling little fine wont stop them... a couple of years in the slammer...or even better the birch would cure the problem.

Why does the Leader call it a "Flintshire beauty spot" when it is in Denbighshire and even in the report they refer twice to Denbighshire council! Nice to see that there are still cretins out there prepared to dump asbestos where people take children and dogs walking, I doubt they will lose any sleep over it though.

Perhaps it was those who knock on your door asking if you want any work done.
