PLANS for a £7.6 million new special school on Anglesey have been given the go ahead.

Head of education service, Gwyn Parri welcomed the news that the Welsh Assembly had agreed in principal to fund construction of a new school in Llangefni.

“Submitting the proposal to the Assembly was a demanding exercise that involved the support of a number of departments within the Council, and I am grateful to colleagues for their contributions,” he said.

The preferred site for the new construction is the Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni and Plas Arthur campus and a consultation on the site is underway.

The Island’s current special school, Ysgol y Bont in Llangefni, opened in he early 1970s and has more than 70 pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities.
Mr Parri added that the Anglesey Council planned to open the school in 2013.
