FLOODS have swept through Colwyn Bay, forcing businesses to close for the day.

Staff at the Bay View Shopping Centre, Sea View Road, were left sweeping flood water from the floors today after torrential rain hit the town.

The water leaked through the roof, damaging stock and leaving managers with no option but to close their stores.

A member of staff at Dorothy Perkins said the team found an inch of water on the shop floor when they arrived at work this morning. She added stock has been damage and said staff are waiting for an assessor from the national company to review the damaged goods.

Staff at Shoe Zone used industrial cleaners to clear the water and closed the store for health and safety reasons. The manager will look at stock levels to see how much business has been lost, but was sure there will be some losses. One member of staff said the drainage system may have struggled to cope with the floods and said the shopping centre has closed twice previously after storms.

Flood damage had affected stores including Holland and Barrett, Bonmarche and The Works.
