GLOWING tributes have been paid to one of the North Wales best-loved priests.
Canon Herbert Lloyd, former Vicar of Rhyl, who died on Sunday night had been ill for some time but deteriorated in the past fortnight and passed away at his home in Prestatyn in the presence of his family. He was aged 79.
Canon Lloyd, a native of Ruthin, was ordained in 1958 and moved to Rhyl in 1974 after first serving as curate in Wrexham and later as Rector of Llanferres with Nercwys and Eryrys before becoming Vicar of Rhosddu, Wrexham .
He was later appointed Canon and Precentor of St Asaph Cathedral and served as Chaplain to the Forces in the TA and held the Territorial Decoration. He became a charismatic figure throughout the region and was in great demand as an after dinner speaker and made himself universally known for his cheery and warm personality.
Married to Margaret, he was father to Sandra, Ruth, Kathy and David and had eight grandchildren.
He retired from the ministry 14 years ago to live in Prestatyn but remained active, helping out at services in parishes over a wide area and assisting at weddings and funerals alike.
His successor as Vicar of Rhyl, Canon John Glover said the Diocese had lost one of its most endearing and popular personalities.
“Herbie was a unique figure, always ready with a smile and a helping hand and his sound advice was widely sought. There will be great sadness in Rhyl at the loss of a man of towering personality. He was regarded as a dear friend and confidant to so many people who will hugely feel his passing.”
Vicar of Prestatyn, Canon D Quentin Bellamy, who first served under Canon Lloyd at Rhyl as a young curate, said: “He was a most wonderful man of God and a truly great Priest with remarkable wisdom, a wealth of experience with a heart of love for God’s people.
“He had a great sense of humour and there was always much laughter in his presence. His joy was in the Lord.”
The funeral will take place at St Thomas’ Church, Rhyl, next Monday at 1pm followed by burial at Prestatyn churchyard.
