A SPEED limit is set to be introduced to help tackle a major road safety concern in Abergele.

Abergele resident Sarah Pointon, 62, has continually aired her fears for pedestrians using the A547 to walk to the new Abergele surgery on North Wales Business Park, because of the narrow pavement and speed of traffic in the 60mph limit.

But Darren Millar, the AM for Clwyd West revealed this week he had received assurances from Conwy County Council that new measures are to be taken to help ease Mrs Pointon’s fears.

The wide hedge that limits the width of the pavement is to be trimmed and, subject to legal agreements, a 40mph speed limit is to come into force on a section near the surgery in the coming weeks.

Mrs Pointon, of St David’s Road, who has a personal concern about the pavement because her husband Terence uses a mobility scooter, said: “The changes will help and it is good that the speed limit will be cut, but Conwy County Council need to make sure they continue to trim the hedge as it causes a lot of problems.

“The pavement is simply not wide enough and you see people having to step out into the road when passing each other. There is not enough room for two mobility scooters to pass. To say it has been frustrating does not do my feelings justice.”

Mr Millar said there were clear dangers for people using the pavement particularly the disabled.

He said: “There were clearly safety issues in place here and I would hope that the changes will help resolve them. There is talk of creating a new path through round the back of the surgery through Eldon Drive and I believe that would definitely help matters.”

Cllr Tim Rowlands, of Gele ward on Conwy County Council, said: “It is a shame this has taken some time to sort out but it is really good news that the speed limit will be cut and the hedge will be trimmed.”

Cllr Rowlands added he had seen dropped kerbs introduced to help address some of the concerns about the road.
