A MAN has been arrested after a seven-hour gun siege in Abergele.
Police were called to a house on Llwyn Morfa shortly after 10pm on Sunday, with the incident ending peacefully just before 5am on Monday after the 46-year old man surrendered to police. He was alone in the property at the time of his arrest.
A police helicopter hovered over Abergele during the night as armed officers, police negotiators and other emergency services worked to see the matter through to a successful conclusion.
During the seven-hour incident, other residents were asked to stay indoors and people returning home were escored by police. The road was blocked off to non-residents through the night.
One resident of Llwyn Morfa, who asked not to be named, watched the drama unfold on the normally quiet street close to Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan.
He said: “You could hear the helicopter flying about above and the road was blocked off. We were advised not to leave the house while the incident was going on for our own safety. I think a few people who live here were not sure quite what was going on.
“It is not something you expect to happen so close to where you live and it was certainly dramatic. But I never felt in any danger in my own home and it was clear the police were experienced in handling these sort of situations.
“I managed to get some sleep but obviously it was a bit concerning that there was still things going on outside.”
The man, who has not been named, is believed to be a resident of the property he was in.
After the man’s arrest, a police presence remained in the Llwyn Morfa area on Monday.
Supt Frazer Jones, of said: “Thankfully the matter was resolved and nobody was injured.
“At no time were members of the public put in any danger and trained officers and staff were able to ensure a safe conclusion to this incident.”
