TECHNOGROUP WELSHPOOL 1, RHYL 2
AFTER such a troubled season Rhyl can feel proud to not only have finished sixth in the Welsh Premier League, but also for coming within two points of qualifying for Europe for a seventh successive year.
Due largely to the club's off the field problems, player boss Greg Strong has lost numerous players during the campaign, including 15 members of last season's title-winning squad, but through it all Rhyl have continued to compete with the best.
Strong has had to build virtually two teams during the most testing of debut seasons as player manager but has done a fantastic job in the most trying of circumstances.
The Lilywhites rounded off the campaign on Saturday with a hard-earned 2-1 win against an already relegated Welshpool outfit.
On a dreadful Maesydre pitch, the game was mainly a midfield battle with all the goal action coming in the last five minutes of the first half.
The visitors took the lead on 42 minutes when Matthew Williams picked up a lose ball in the box to knock in his 20th league goal of the season.
Rhyl were then denied a penalty for a blatant handball on the goal-line before Welshpool equalised.
Moments later the returning Rob Turner provided a cracking finish from the edge of the area to make it 2-1 at half time when the game was effectively over.
Rhyl are due to end their campaign tomorrow night (Tuesday) with a League Cup final appearance against new Welsh Premier champions The New Saints at Airbus.
