A PROJECT helping provide work opportunites for young people in Abergele is set to grow after receiving a five-figure cash injection.
The Abergele Youth Action ITACA project has been awarded £20,000 in the first phase of the North Wales Coast Strategic Regeneration Area’s community fund, with the cash be used to help make further improvements to the Hesketh House building on Bridge Street where computer training is offered.
Since being created in 2001 as a community response to anti social behaviour in Abergele, Abergele Youth Action has provided IT training and boosted the job opportunities of young people from the town who would not otherwise not be in training, work or education.
Linda Tavernor, project manager, said: “We are delighted to have received this money. This will help us with what we are trying to achieve here. We will be applying for more funding to help us to continue to expand.
“What we do here gives another opportunity to young people and we seek to help them as much as we can.”
The continued growth of the project has allowed it to start employing full-time staff, with management hoping the continued expansion will enable them to employ two young people who have been out of work.
Cllr Sam Rowlands, of Gele ward on Conwy County Council, said: “This is very good news for Abergele and is testimony to the good work which is carried out by Abergele Youth Action. This money, I'm sure will be used to help better the young people of Abergele for years to come.”
