27 people banned from all pubs in Denbigh

ALMOST 30 people are banned from Denbigh pubs as the police and publicans get tough on drunken yobs and anti-social behaviour.

The bannings are a stark warning to other evening revellers as a new campaign has been launched to make the town even safer.

The bans for drinkers were brought in by the Pubwatch scheme, a national voluntary organisation set up to achieve a safer social drinking environment in licensed premises helping to reduce alcohol-related crime.

Sergeant Andy Hunter from Denbigh police said: "Denbigh has a very effective Pubwatch with 27 persons currently banned for a number of reasons usually as a consequence of some form of disorder either inside the premises or on some occasions as a consequence of something that occurred after the person left the premises.

"The fact 27 are banned is testimony to the no nonsense attitude of licensees in the town.

“The effect of this is two-fold.

"Firstly a marked reduction in instances of disorder within licensed premises for fear of being banned and secondly a reduction in disorder generally.

"This has improved the night time economy with more people coming back into the pubs and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere."

Last Friday Denbigh police combined the successful watch with a new take away watch as Sgt Hunter said there were still the odd incidents within the town at some of the eateries.

"Take aways within the town and the licensees have come together in support of their colleagues who work within those premises.

"The effect of this change will be, anyone arrested and subsequently charged as a consequence of their behaviour within or towards a takeaway will be put before the newly formed Take away and Pubwatch committee for consideration of a ban.

"This will mean they will be banned from the pubs and take away establishments within the town.

“We the police will manage it and we will present the case at the monthly meetings unlike Pubwatch where the licensee of the pub would have to go to the committee meetings to give evidence."

The message from police in the campaign is 'kick off in here, no ifs, no buts, you're barred from the take away and all the pubs.
