PUPILS at a Prestatyn primary school are celebrating news that their playground is to benefit from a £4,000 face lift.

Ysgol Bodnant Infants School in Denbighshire have learned their playground is to be transformed as part of the ‘RBS’ Supergrounds’ programme, to create an improved outdoor environment for education, learning and fun.

The £6 million programme, managed by the national school grounds charity,
Learning through Landscapes and supported by environmental charity Groundwork has already transformed over 50 school grounds across Wales.

In its six year history, RBS Supergrounds has made learning more exciting, as 78 per cent of the schools say their improved grounds have introduced new ways of teaching and 68 per cent say children’s attitudes towards learning have improved. 82 per cent of school children are also having more fun, and this has led to an increase in physical activity in 65 per cent of the schools, helping to improve the children’s health and fitness.

Ysgol Bodnant Infants School became involved with the scheme through Tracey Davies from the RBS branch in Prestatyn, whose children attend the school.

Tracey Davies from RBS Prestatyn said: “As a parent at the school I know how difficult it is for schools to raise funds and this scheme is an ideal way for us to improve the school grounds to help the children develop.

It’s great that The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, through RBS Supergrounds, agreed to give its support to the school because of my involvement.

“This project already has a proven history of having a very positive effect on communities, teachers, children and education, so we are all delighted that the bank is offering its support to Ysgol Bodnant Infants School.”

Helen Vernon, Headteacher at Ysgol Bodnant Infants School, said: “It’s fantastic that RBS Supergrounds is supporting the development of the playground at the school. School playgrounds are one of the few safe outdoor spaces that are available to children.

“For many children who do not have access to a garden or live near a park, school grounds are probably their only experience of the outdoors and an important part of the learning environment. We are really excited about working with RBS
Supergrounds to ensure that the playground makes a real difference to the pupils’ lives.”
