TWENTY-FOUR runners made a special effort at the weekend to help those less fortunate than themselves.
The members of Prestatyn Running Club took part in a 12-hour treadmill relay at their base, Saints Health and Fitness Centre in Meliden, to raise money for the Haiti Disaster Appeal.
Each of the runners – men and women, juniors and seniors - ran for half an hour, with people paying £1 each to guess the total distance covered.
The actual distance attained was 88 miles 200 yards, and the £20 for the closest estimate went to club member Mel Hooper, who was just a few yards over the figure.
The event raised about £550, and organizer Gareth Hughes said he was delighted with the way members and their sponsors had responded to the appeal.
“It helped bring it home to us how fortunate we are compared with those suffering in Haiti, despite runners being notorious for moaning and groaning about insignificant little pains and injuries,” he said.
“We are particularly grateful to Mark Thomas and his staff at Saints for their enthusiastic support and for making their excellent facilities available to us,” he added.
Less than 24 hours later many of the relay team members were in action again, competing in the Borders Road Running League in Abergele.
