A GROUP of golfers have put their hands in their pockets and raised money for a set of deserving charities.
More than £8,000 was raised last year by a group of golfers, including a number of Welsh-language entertainers including Bryn Terfel, Rhys Meirion and Bryn Vaughan, who gave money every time they played a round of golf.
The Tuesday Boys started playing in the early 1990s with just four players including members of well-known Welsh singing group Hogia’r Wyddfa and actor John Ogwen.
Bob Walford, 73, of Abergele, is the group’s treasurer and a member of Abergele Golf Club, he said: “It started 17 years ago, it was four players. It built up from there. About seven years ago we started collecting money for charity. Nobody wins money when we play, we give it to charity. In total there are about 80 people in the group, but about 30 play each week.”
Last week a number of charities benefited from a slice of last year’s cash after a cheque presentation at the Abergele club.
Those benefiting included the DEC Haiti fund, Ty Gobaith children’s hospice, North Wales Air Ambulance and Ysgol Hafod Lon special needs school in Pwllheli.
Mr Walford said: “In total we have collected £36,000 for charity. It is good fun, everybody has a superb day out. Everybody enjoys it, we play for the pleasure of playing and helping out charity at the same time.
“We play 17 different courses and we always get a reduced rate. We play at Denbigh, Conwy, Caernarfon and Porthmadog. It developed more than being organised, it was something that grew out of nothing.
“Last year we played 48 Tuesdays out of 52. There are a lot of retired people and quite a few who work and play when they get a day off.
“It is a great pleasure to be able to help out, that is what it is all about. I would also like to thank all the clubs for their help.”
