TECHNOGROUP Welshpool head into this weekend’s clash at Carmarthen (Saturday, 2.30pm) looking to turn round a wretched run of six consecutive defeats.

Boss Huw Griffiths only has one extra player in contention following the 3-1 home defeat to Haverfordwest, with Mike Cronshaw (right) pressing for a starting place.

The Lilywhites’ chief said he is hopeful that his side can arrest their slump and he pointed to the last 20 minutes against Haverfordwest as evidence of improvement.

He said: “I was really pleased with the performance from the lads in the last 20 minutes and with the chances we created we could’ve nicked a point.

“We are trying to work on a different shape. We’ve got some new players in so it’s about finding a system that best suits the players. We just have to be difficult to beat and pinch a goal when we can.”

However Griffiths is under no illusions about the task ahead, warning that Carmarthen will be going all out as they push towards the top 10.

He said: “When we played them at our place, Mark Aizlewood had just left and they were as good as anyone we played. I think they are in a false position. there’s no reason why they can’t go on a winning streak of 10 games towards the end of the season.

“They’ve got a lot to play for, they’ve got to win this game to keep them in touch with the top 10 so it will be a really difficult game but I said it from the start of the season, if our players play well on the day we are capable of beating anyone.”

Griffiths also paid tribute to the Welshpool fans and support staff, saying: “The lads and the supporters need a massive pat on the back. Wyn the kit man, Terry who has stepped up to assistant and Clive, they’ve all been fantastic.”
