NEWTOWN maintained their improved New Year form with a battling goalless draw at home to mid-table Carmarthen Town.
New striker Paul Roberts was handed a debut, but it was goalkeeper Dave Roberts who took the limelight for the Robins.
The on-loan Aberystwyth Town goalkeeper gave an assured display to frustrate the Old Gold and maintain his second successive clean sheet for the club.
The goalless draw also represented Newtown’s first of an inconsistent campaign.
Newtown supporters were expectant after a promising start and on 20 minutes Dylan Blain raced through on goal only to be denied by goalkeeper Neil Thomas.
However chances were sparse in a drab first-half, with new signing Dale Griffiths giving a confident display in the heart of the Carmarthen Town defence.
Carmarthen had two golden chances to break the deadlock at the end of the first-half.
An uncharacteristically poor clearance from Roberts fell kindly for Mark Pritchard, only to see his blushes spared as the Carmarthen striker saw his lobbed shot come back off the woodwork.
Pritchard came close seconds later only for Roberts to claw away his goalbound header.
Newtown responded after the interval with the attack minded Adam Worton and Damien Daniels becoming more involved.
Daniels spurned a decent opening, while Worton dispossessed Nathan Cotterrall on the edge of the area only for Paul Roberts to squander a rare opportunity.
Newtown unleashed Welsh schoolboy international Jamie Breeze for the final 30 minutes and he proved a constant threat.
Meanwhile Carmarthen Town introduced Nicky Palmer, who also threatened to steal the headlines with his shot drifting inches wide of the upright.
Palmer also found the target from distance only for an assured Roberts to gather.
