BOWLS players who missed out on their regular weekly action in Prestatyn due to an administrative mix-up are to receive a free game in compensation.
More than 40 members of the Monday Veterans League were left kicking their heels last month when they arrived at the North Wales Bowls Centre, Prestatyn, and discovered they could not play as a visiting team of players took to the carpet instead.
The unavailability of the venue led to threats of players pulling out of the league, but Clwyd Leisure, who are responsible for the centre, have acted quickly to prevent the row escalating further.
Ian Turley, Clwyd Leisure general manager, said: “This was a genuine mix-up over a double booking,
“We will now be offering the players a free game at the end of the season, and we will also be laying on a buffet for them.
“The players were understandably unhappy at not getting their games and some said they weren’t coming again.
“But the next week I saw the vast majority of them there again and hopefully we can now draw a line under the matter.”
The centre is used for league matches each Monday between October and March.
Prestatyn Town Councillor Mike German was one of the players affected by the mix-up.
He said: “Coming shortly after the Christmas period, the players were looking forward to getting back into playing bowls and it was very frustrating that we were deprived of the opportunity for our weekly game.
“Everybody makes mistakes but Clwyd Leisure need to make sure this sort of thing never happens again. Professional organisations like this cannot keep having mix-ups like this.
“The offer of a free game and buffet will hopefully allow us to move on from this incident.”
