A VANDAL attack on Prestatyn Youth Club left asbestos disturbed and will force the centre to shut for 12 days.
Safety tents will be used as Denbighshire County Council closes the club, on Dawson Drive, between February 3 and 15 to remove asbestos from the boiler room.
The town's Mayor Gerry Frobisher said the attack, which took place in September last year, is another example of a minority spoiling the enjoyment of youngsters.
He said: "It is just a shame. It is always a minority who spoil it for the rest. It is a well used facility, two or three times a week by the youth club and also by a kung fu group. It is well used and in a good locality.
"The youngsters have suffered, they are the losers again, it is a minority that have spoilt it for the enjoyment of the kids."
The council is reassuring residents there has been no risk to young people or members of the public using the building.
Alternative arrangements have been made to host meetings at Prestatyn Leisure Centre and all groups who use the building will be notified of the temporary closure.
A spokeswoman for Denbighshire County Council said: "Denbighshire has a management process for asbestos in place in accordance with the regulations.
"In the case of Prestatyn Youth Club, although the vandalism was reported in September 2009 and the doors were boarded up, the asbestos was in the boiler room - an area not open to the public and, unless disturbed or damaged, the asbestos did not pose a risk and the situation has been monitored throughout this time.
"As part of our rolling programme of asbestos removal, Denbighshire has taken the decision to remove it to ensure that there is no risk to young people or members of the public using the building."
