INTERVIEW: Imagination runs wild in Rhyl

BODY Talk, Just An Illusion, Flashback - 80s trio Imagination were responsible for bringing the soul back into pop during the electronic era.
Now original member Errol Kennedy is serving all their classic tracks in a brand new tour including a stop at the Rhyl Pavilion Theatre.
The Pioneer caught up with the enthusiastic performer to talk about what audiences can expect.

"I'm just full of excitement," beamed Errol. " It's so important [to get the show right]. I'm a musician and want to be sure the fans enjoy how we bring the music across."
Having performed just one test gig ahead of the tour, Errol confirmed the reception has been staggering and has made him eager to get on with the UK tour.

"Expect some great music and a great time. You will be taken back into the 80s," he confirmed. "I've wanted to get it together for quite a long time. So many people have been saying 'You should be out there! - Spandau [Ballet] are out there, you should be out there too!'.
"It's been two decades since I've performed it as well. For me, it is very emotional. I've really thrown the kitchen sink at this tour. I want to bring [the audience] the sexuality of the music. We need to make it fun. It is fun. I'm sure when the audience hear the music they will enjoy it."

Imagination were at the forefront of the British music scene in the early 1980s, achieving chart hits in 28 countries, four platinum discs, nine gold discs and more than a dozen silver discs across the globe.

"There are so many [highlights]! One of my greatest moments was performing at the Royal Albert Hall in front of people like Prince Charles. There were so many other great artists, like Sade who had just released her first album, and there were 5,000 people. It was just amazing."

Having spent a lot of time behind the scenes in the music industry producing as well as performing with his very musical family ("Nearly all my family are involved in music in some way!"), and a World Cup single on the horizon, his time in the group has served Errol well.

But why has the music endured so well?

"I think because we were a British band," said Errol. "Back in the day we wanted to go and try something different. It was the way the music was put together. Body Talk we made a bit slower, the sexual-ness - very sexy but very catchy at the same time.
"People seem to want to latch on to the music. There's a nostalgia. For some it's how they met their first partner."

  • Errol Kennedy's Imagination Band will be performing live at the Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl at 7:30pm on February 7. For more information or to book tickets contact the Box Office on 01745 330 000 or visit the website at www.rhylpavilion.co.uk
