Abergele Carnival is set to return this year

ABERGELE Carnival looks certain to return this year after a date was set for its revival.

A solution has been reached after talks between the Abergele Carnival Committee, North Wales Police and Conwy County Council’s Highways department, with the popular event scheduled for Saturday, July 3.

Established in the town for more than 50 years, the annual summer spectacular was cancelled last year after organisers could not reach agreement with police over the cost of signage for the carnival parade.

To help guarantee the smooth planning and running of the event, two members of Abergele Town Council and a police representative will join the carnival committee.
Julie O’Hanlon, committee chairperson, said: “We are very pleased that the carnival will definitely be going ahead. We welcome the additions to the committee and hope they will be as involved as possible.

“What happened last year was a great disappointment and we are sure the people of Abergele will be delighted to see the carnival return. We have spaces on our committee for members of the public and would welcome their involvement.”

The successful outcome of the talks means the parade is set to proceed along the committee’s favoured route from Market Street, along Water Street and into Pentre Mawr Park. A rolling road closure will be implemented.

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has helped co-ordinate the meetings to bring the carnival back and is looking to see the event make up for lost time by providing a memorable day for residents of the town.

He said: “I’m delighted that a date has been set for the 2010 Abergele Carnival. There was huge disappointment last year when the event was cancelled and local residents will be keen to see the carnival re-established this July.

“There is no reason why this year cannot be the biggest and best carnival hosted by the town and I am confident that if everyone continues to work together the event will be a huge success.

“Abergele has put on some terrific, fun filled carnivals over the years. I look forward to enjoying one again on July 3.”
