AN INJURED man was helicoptered to hospital last week after he fell off Llandudno Pier.

A shocked nearby business owner immediately called the Coastguard on Wednesday afternoon to help the man, who was soaking wet and crawling over the rocks on the small section of beach to the west of the pier.

Llandudno Coast Rescue, Llandudno Lifeboat, the ambulance and North Wales Police were alerted to the scene, as was the RAF helicopter ‘Rescue 122’.

The unnamed man was conscious, but suffering from a lower leg fracture.

Due to his awkward position between the pier and a high wall of rock, the decision was made for Rescue 122 to airlift the man out.

The helicopter then took the man to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor for treatment.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: “It was a high priority for us considering the time of year as it is very cold and the man was wet - there is a danger of hypothermia. It was a very high level of importance.

“From a Coastguard point of view, the actual cost doesn’t register. If we think two helicopters are needed, we will send out two helicopters.

It is always good when we have an incident like this successfully resolved.”
