A NEW hotel and business development is set to be built in Rhyl bringing with it as many as 250 jobs.
Northern Ireland-based Braidwater has revealed plans for a 60-bed hotel with family pub, restaurant and eco-friendly office space opposite the Sainsbury’s store.
Plans have been submitted to Denbighshire County Council for the old showfield site, which would act as a gateway to the town.
A spokesman for Braidwater said: “The employment potential for Rhyl is huge. A total of 250 jobs could be accommodated on the site.
“The first phase, which would be a family pub/restaurant would have a dedicated children's’ play area and would be run by a national operator.
“Talks are also taking place between Braidwater and a national hotel chain for a 60-bedroom facility. Both the restaurant and hotel could provide some 50 jobs for the local community in the immediate future.”
The development would see a new entrance off the roundabout at the Clwyd Retail Park flanked by the planting of new trees, with the buildings to be of low density and set back from Bryn Cwnin Road.
Braidwater has also revealed it is in talks with Austrian companies about potentially building the office space in an eco-friendly style.
The development has been seen as a welcome addition to the ongoing regeneration of Rhyl and act as a business destination for the town. But Vale of Clwyd MP Chris Ruane has reservations about the proposed location.
He said: “This is the right project but the wrong place. The fact that yet another company is looking to invest substantially in Rhyl is fantastic news, but I believe that any such development should be placed closer to the town centre rather than on Rhyl’s precious open green spaces.
“Rhyl promenade has been totally transformed over the past 10 years but there are a few remaining brownfield building plots, such as the Grange Hotel, with views over the Irish Sea, in the heart of the commercial and tourist area of Rhyl and I would urge the developers to go there.”
