A RESIDENT is pressing for urgent safety measures on the main access road to the new Abergele surgery.

Sarah Pointon, of St David’s Road, will tell Conwy County Council representatives and Clwyd West AM Darren Millar this week about the lack of width on the pavement which runs along the A547 near the North Wales Business Park.

She believes the 60mph speed limit between the business park and the Gwrych Castle gates, poor lighting and a lack of dropped kerbs combine to create serious hazards for mobility scooter users such as her husband Terry, and friend Linda Lugo. She fears the problem will worsen when the surgery opens this month and the level of traffic increases.

Mrs Pointon, 62, said: “The pavement is not wide enough for two prams or two mobility scooters passing at the same time.

“There is a 60mph speed limit and the road is unlit. There could be very serious consequences if scooters or prams were passing at the same time and one had to go on the road, with cars coming at a fast speed.

“The road is busy enough as it is and the situation will become even more dangerous when the surgery is open.”

Mrs Pointon wants a pathway access from Eldon Drive and Troon Way to the new medical centre so that pedestrians can avaoid the main road.

Ms Lugo, also 62, joined Mrs Pointon on her mobility scooter at the site to illustrate the narrowness of the pavement.

She said: “I rely on my mobility scooter to get around and would welcome any improvements that can be made. It is difficult there as there is no drop in the pavement onto the road.”

Mr Millar said: “I am hopeful this meeting will help in improving the situation. The road is not well lit and is a hazard to the disabled, those with prams and others who use it.”

Despite Mr Millar’s optimism, a spokeswoman for Conwy County Council this week said it is unlikely there will be any change to the situation in the near future.

She said: “We are aware of these concerns and we're continuing to look into the possible options, but it's not something that can be resolved in the short-term.”
