POLICE have launched a hunt for a man accused of stealing car number plates and using them when driving away from petrol stations in Rhyl without paying for fuel.

The man, who was captured on closed circuit television, is believed to be responsible for a string of thefts across the region within the four months.

The drive offs have happened from petrol stations in Rhyl, Llanddulas and Holywell, while number plates have been stolen from Wrexham, Prestatyn and Rhyl.

It is believed that two offenders have been responsible for numerous offences, where they have stolen number plates off parked cars and then placed the plates on their own vehicles – an Astra and an Audi A4 - which have then been involved in the drive off's.

One man has been arrested and charged in connection with the offences, but efforts to trace the second man have failed and a further 6 crimes are believed to have been committed since August, by this man who drives a black Vauxhall Astra.

Anyone who recognises the man or may have information relating to the incidents is asked to contact PC Keelie Owen at St Asaph Police Station 0845 6071001 (Welsh line), 0845 6071002 (English line) or Crimestoppers Cymru Wales on 0800 555111.
